Natural stone tiles such as granite, marble or slate, are attractive options to consider when remodeling. The beauty of the stone natural is highlighted when used in entryways, showers or countertops. Grouting natural stone, however, requires special care. Certain types of natural stone can be easily scratched by sanded grout. Grout can also fill voids in porous natural stone, ruining its look. Natural stone must first be sealed, then grouted using the proper technique and tools.
1
Seal the entire surface of the tile with a natural stone sealer and sponge. Follow the manufacturer's directions regarding application procedures and how long you must wait until you can grout. Do not get the sealer into the grout joints, as it will prevent grout from bonding properly.
2
Pour some grout mix into a mixing bucket and add water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mix the grout by hand with a margin trowel until it has a creamy consistency. Wait 10 minutes, then mix the grout again by hand. Do not add any more water.
3
Load the margin trowel with grout and place the grout into the grout joints between the tiles. Alternatively, load a grout bag with grout and squeeze the grout into the joints. This prevents excess grout from smearing across the surface of the tiles.
4
Hold the grout float at a 45-degree angle and sweep it diagonally across the grout lines. This forces the grout completely and evenly into the joint. Wipe off the excess grout from the surface of the tiles with the edge of the grout float or the margin trowel.
5
Wipe the surface of the tile with a damp sponge after 30 minutes to remove the remaining grout. Wring out the sponge, then repeat. Always use clean water from another bucket to get the sponge damp.
6
Tool the grout lines by holding the sponge in your hand and pushing the edge of the sponge along the grout lines with light pressure from your forefinger. Tooling ensures that the grout lines are uniform in height with no smears or lumps.
7
Wait several hours, then wipe the surface of the tile with a dry rag to remove the dried haze.
Things You Will Need
Natural stone sealer
Sponges
Mixing bucket
Grout
Margin trowel
Grout float
Grout bag
Clean water and bucket
Tip
Check with the tile manufacturer to verify that the tile is compatible with the brand of sealer you want to use. The chemicals in the sealer may react with the natural stone, discoloring it.
Warning
Do not use an electric drill to mix grout. Always mix by hand.
